What is a monogram?
A monogram is a design that often comprises of 2 or 3 initials and occasionally other graphic elements to form a unique logo or symbol. Monograms date back as far as Ancient Greece, but in more modern times you can see them used to identify brands in the fashion and sports industries for example. Monograms are also popular amongst freelance designers, which gave me the idea to work on my own.
The choice of typeface used is critical in the way the different letterforms can fit together, some more naturally than others. It is also important to convey what the person/brand is about just like any other logo design job.
Wanting to create my own monogram, I researched what others had done. Looking closely at their choice of typeface, how they had modified the characters in anyway and also if any symbols or design elements had been included. I made an extensive collection pining them to their own board on Pinterest.
Here are 20 of some of my favourite monograms from my research, including some well known established brands.
